Musical Theatre (Dance)


Shirley Johnston has been involved with musical theatre here in San Diego for many years. After 12 years of being a dance instructor, she segued into high school show choir choreography, which proved to be excellent training grounds for musical theatre. Shirley has choreographed for Montgomery, Chula Vista, Bonita Vista and Eastlake High Schools, the Coronado Playhouse, Lamplighters Theater, Starlight Musical Theatre, Lyric Opera San Diego (Resident Choreographer for 5 years) San Diego Actors Alliance, Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), and she is currently the Resident Choreographer for the California Youth Conservatory.
Some of Shirley's favorite roles include: the Fortune Teller in Sideshow, Brenda in Smokey Joe's Cafe, Dominique in Lucky Stiff, Charlaine in Ain't Misbehavin', Bonnie in Anything Goes, and Charlotte in A Little Night Music. Favorite shows she's choreographed: The Most Happy Fella for PLNU, Mame, Fiddler on the Roof, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cinderella, The Music Man, The Pirates of Penzance, all for Lyric Opera San Diego, plus 13 the Musical, Sideshow, Annie, Shrek, The Secret Garden, and Little Shop of Horrors all for California Youth Conservatory.
